The Creation of a Design

When it comes to creating a kowhaiwhai design I begin by working on a series of sketches. Through these preliminary drawings they are developed into a kowhaiwhai pattern. I find it easy to work this way because it gives me more freedom to experiment with line and form. When this stage is completed I simply transfer the design to the panel after working out where the colours will go. See following samples:
